We are all aware that Asian countries do not have a strong union like other western countries and in order to reverse this trend senior officials from Asia Pacific economies are working for a summit meeting of all the countries in order to revive stalled global trade talks.

This move is the result of meeting of the officials of the major economies in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum for completing the agenda at its annual meeting. Coming up with a separate statement rather inclusion of the issue in an end of summit communique might underscore the concerns in the region that the Doha round of negotiations might fall apart.

A Latin American delegate who did not wish to be identified said:

APEC wants to give a push, to give the political will to the Doha round. APEC supports the multilateral trading system and we want strong political will, otherwise there will be debilitating consequences.
